Let Us Count Our Days

By Gloria Lundstrom
A few days ago, my mother who just turned 96 years young, had her annual health check up and also had her pacemaker checked for its battery life. She called and with excitement in her voice, she announced, "Missy, the Dr. says I have 9 years left on my pacemaker battery." Then she continued, "My cousin called the other day and she is 103...so I may not be going anywhere for a while." (Note-this is her second pacemaker. The first one was a 1991 model and they assured it would last but she outlived that one, so she is now cruising on with her second pacemaker. She truly reminds me of the bunny on the Energizer battery commercial!)

Would it or wouldn't it be interesting to know the length of our heart's life and battery. If someone told you today that you would live this long...or you will die on such and such a day...how differently would you live? We are tempted to live our lives for ourselves and our comfort. We are content to live our lives to satisfy our energies rather than eternity.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NAS) says, "He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart."

Eternity is not an insinuation; it is a destination and only we can make that choice. That is why God has given us our own free will. Let's remember that our eternal life begins at the time of conception and our life clock is ticking. Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 declares, "There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven- A time to give birth and a time to die." Not one of us knows what this year holds for us thus far but if you knew your "exit" date from this earth, how differently would you live each day? What would you change?

Let us count our days and let our days count for all eternity.
