How To Be Idle

By Gloria Lundstrom
I don't know about you… maybe you experience the same thing. As I look ahead, I can only look so far as it is too much to handle in one glance. I've learned to live one day at a time and to ask God for strength and guidance for that day…and then the next, and the next! I've had to learn to do as the Scripture commands and what my dear Mother reminds me to do over and over again, "Cast all your cares upon Him, for He careth for you."
How To Be Idle

It's been wonderful, but very busy, these first months of spring. I find it hard to get all my office work done on the road. There are so many interruptions…like someone said, "Life and living on the road is not normal, no matter how you look at it!" Just last night my precious mother told me, "Missy, very few people could stay on the road for over 43 years like you and Larry have done." But then she added, "But that's what God called you to do, and what He calls you to, He provides the way and means. People need Christ so I pray that God can keep you two on the road!" I chuckled and told her, "Yeah Mom, someone once asked me how we could do this for 11 months out of the year for so long and I told them, 'Number 1: You have to be called; Number 2: You have to be dedicated; and Number 3: You have to be a bit crazy because no one in their right mind would live this lifestyle for the fun of it.' It's definitely a calling, and we are called!"

Now, with all that said, sometimes the anxiety of keeping up with and getting all the ministry demands done is overwhelming. We drove to a library the other day to work as the library offers access to the internet and all of the research materials we could ever need. I thought the library would be open until 9:00 p.m. so I could really get a lot done. As I entered the library the sign read, "Mon-Thurs 9:00-9:00 p.m., Fri & Sat 9:00-5:00 p.m." Knowing it was Friday and with not getting to the library until 3:00 p.m. since drove an hour just to find a library, I groaned, "Oh no, we only have two hours until we have to be out." My heart raced with nervousness. I had my whole work afternoon and evening planned, and KABOOM, it was squelched! I rushed over to the Religious section to look for a certain book I needed for reference and a book title jumped out at me…"How to be Idle". My heart fluttered as I thought, "Oh, how I long to be idle just long enough to recharge my physical and spiritual batteries." Then I laughed out loud because the incident was so timely. I don't want to be lazy or idle, I just long to be more relaxed, focused, and effective for the Lord than I've ever been. In the midst of my worry, God spoke Psalm 46:10 to me. "Gloria, be still and know that I am God. Give all your cares to me, I can handle them."

I don't know about you… maybe you experience the same thing. As I look ahead, I can only look so far as it is too much to handle in one glance. I've learned to live one day at a time and to ask God for strength and guidance for that day…and then the next, and the next! I've had to learn to do as the Scripture commands and what my dear Mother reminds me to do over and over again, "Cast all your cares upon Him, for He careth for you." That "you" includes the entire world. If we do as this Scripture says, we will all lead a more relaxed and blessed journey called life.
