I am the Lord, I change not

By Larry Lundstrom
With the onset of the New Year and all its immediate demands that require change, I find Malachi 3:6 very comforting.

"I am the Lord, I change not."

Ready or not! We are almost 1/4 of the way into another busy year. Unfortunately, I didn't finish all my projects and goals from last year, and I feel the pressure (mostly from myself) of all I "must" accomplish in 2011. Many of the goals that I desire require change. I like change...but change is sometimes hard for me. You can ask my kids - they still tease me! I continue to shave with my favorite Gillette blade and my old standby foamy Gillette shaving cream. I still like the same shampoo I used for years. I still like the same brand "gold toe" black dress socks. If I find something I really like, my mottos is, "Why change? It works!"

I can recall many years ago while all the kids were home, I heard them laughing hysterically in my bedroom. I walked in to see them holding 3 pairs of bell bottom slacks that had neatly hung on a hanger in the back of my closet for 15 years. They chided, "Dad, what are these things doing in your closet? We'll never let you wear those bell bottoms again! They've been out of fashion for forever." Of course, the old conservative me says, "They're in excellent shape, hold onto them long enough and they'll come back in fashion!" But, I remember my children quickly informing me that they were history and gone forever. (Guess what...they're coming back in style, plus the rolled cuffs from the fifties! I should've hung on to them - ha!)

Like it or not, we are weaved into a web of change and live in a constantly changing world. I'm overwhelmed at how rapidly we are changing in our country. Things are in and out of style so quickly that with just one blink of the eye, we could miss it! The latest electronic device, computer software or business enterprise is "up to date" until you buy them. Then - BANG - there's an improved new model or addition.

All of this change can be unsettling at times, leaving us feeling bewildered and anxious. With the onset of the New Year and all its immediate demands that require change, I find Malachi 3:6 very comforting.

"I am the Lord, I change not."

When I meditate on that verse, it brings stability to my spirit and soul. Christ has been, and will always remain the same. That's the only sure fact we can count on. He still saves, leads, guides, protects and comforts. He still provides peace amidst our stress filled lives. Friend, we need not fear the future with all its changes if we walk with God. He has and will continue to be our "all in all".
