Why is it so easy to get in trouble with our finances: Very subtly the lure of money can lead to the lust of money then to the loss of money and ultimately to a life that lacks money! In Part 1 we talked about the Lure of Money, now let's continue with the Lust, Loss & Lack of Money.

B. The lust of money

We can easily take on a humanistic approach reflected on TV and by society in general. It says: "Take care of No #1, you deserve it, no matter the cost or consequences, everyone is doing it, having it", and yes… now paying for it. We know we are in danger when the idea of having money takes up all our time and attention. We think about it during the day, scheme of ways to get it, manipulate events and people in order to get it, dream about it and then sell a part of ourselves to get it. This is where addictive behaviors are fueled and fostered - this is lusting after money.

Easy credit makes it easy for people to leap into trouble with both feet.

This line of credit can be what keeps us from knowing how far past broke we are. Consumer Reports says Americans have over 1 billion pieces of plastic with one of the major credit cards in 74% of all households.

C. The loss of money

As the monthly bills begin to roll in, every available dollar is sent to creditors gradually, only receiving minimum pay so that each one can be taken care of. The bank account precariously teeters on being overdrawn.

Our time and energy shifts over to a focus on getting out of trouble. We work overtime, argue about bills, escape having to deal with money, start believing there is no way out and begin to cut our ties to the very thing we need: church and the fellowship of other believers.

D. The lack of money

There is now no money for essentials, let alone extras. Things like sports events or extra classes for the kids have to be put on the shelf. Coffee breaks and get away lunches are no longer available. There is no credit for emergency breakdowns, fills at the gas station or dentist appointments that should be kept. Savings is a joke with a very big and painful punch line …we are living on the line.

The family feels it first and then the church. No offering, no tithes, nothing to plant in the way of seed and therefore no harvest. To prevent feeling bad, too often, the choice is to quit going to church and worship in our home watching Brother Jones on TV.

You may find yourself in one of these areas - please allow this article to serve as a "wakeup call" and for you to realize the path you're on before it's too late and the lure of money becomes a full-fledged lack of money.
